Abstract Based on the analysis of foreign publications considered is the evolution of the European spatial economics of the second half of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century: the emergence of the Italian theory of industrial districts, theory of innovative environment (GREMI-approach) and competitive clusters. Typical features and specific characteristics are shown of the theoretical constructions originated in the depths of French spatial economics
