Abstract Based on the current statistical information the article analyzes the condition and trends of socio-economic development of the Far Eastern Federal District in 2017. The comparative analysis is made with average trends in Russia. The article shows that the trends of socio-economic development in the Far Eastern Federal District have different directions. Together with the positive growth rates in production, mainly thanks to processing industry; the revival of investment activity because of realization of large oil, gas and infrastructural projects and several state law initiatives on preferential treatment in several territories of the Far East; positive dynamics of foreign trade turnover; the article makes note of: decrease in nominal financial results of enterprises; the preservation of negative dynamics in housing construction; the continuous decrease of real population income; the decrease of population due to not only migration but also natural decline
