Abstract A study of the structural and dynamic characteristics of the industrial complex of the Far Eastern Federal District in 2019-2023 (from the perspective of its division into the extractive and manufacturing sectors) revealed a certain contradiction between them. Thus, in some regions, there has been a significant decline in the share of the extractive sector, with a comparable growth in the manufacturing sector in the structure of production (in terms of the volume of shipped products). At the same time, a number of other characteristics of the extractive sector of industry (share in the regionsт' GDP, positive dynamics of investment processes and physical indicators of production) indicate its continuing growth in importance in the economy of the Far Eastern macro-region. A detailed study of the territorial and sectoral characteristics and dynamics of the progressiveness of the manufacturing sectorт's structure has shown that its growth in the overall structure of the Far Eastern Federal District's industry is somewhat nominal. In reality, it still reflects the growing contribution of the extractive sector to the macro-region's economy, but with intra-sectoral modernization in the gold mining industry, which predominates in its structure. This is undoubtedly a positive trend, but one that is still developing ‘within’ the raw materials sector and has a very limited impact on the structural modernization of the regional industrial complex as a whole. The identified features of the industrial structure in the Far Eastern Federal District are, in our opinion, manifestations of the type of economy (in this case, an economy specializing in raw materials) and are confirmed by the data from other Russian regions
