Abstract The paper examines the features and trends of the development of the eastern regions of Russia, identifies the factors that determine them and suggests the state policy aimed at a more balanced and dynamic development of the eastern territories. Empirical analysis has shown that in the development of the eastern territories of the Russian Federation, along with the predicted decline in business activity, there are facts that cannot be attributed to the expected ones: the relatively prosperous demographic and economic situation of the northern territories, the widespread growth of the extractive sector, the decline in the competitiveness of the economies of southern Siberia, and the emergence of not only a meridional but also a latitudinal spatial gap. Regression estimates have confirmed that the evolution of the proportions of development in the east of the country was determined mainly by market factors and mechanisms, and state investments did not have a proper impact. The key direction for the development of the East should be the creation of a large domestic market based on the deployment of chains of processing industries of the region’s rich natural resources. A well-developed network of transport infrastructure should become the infrastructural basis of internal cooperation
