Abstract On the basis of the official statistics for 2015 the study analyzes the main trends of socio- economic development of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD). The paper considers the economic situation in the FEFD in comparison with the all-Russian trends, current development conditions in the sphere of production of goods and services, social sphere and the sphere of external economic cooperation. The authors formulate the functioning problem of the socio-economic system of the Far Eastern subjects of the Russian Federation. The paper concludes that in 2015 the FEFD had unsustainable socio-economic development, characterized by following major trends: reducing potential for the development of industrial production; continuing decline in the manufacturing industry; preservation of negative dynamics of investment activity; sharp decline in exports and negative dynamics of imports; and ‘slipping’ negative dynamics in real wages and incomes.
